A number of our employees have family, friends or colleagues who have battled cancer, particularly breast cancer. Early detection and treatment can have a profound impact on an individual’s success in fighting the disease. At ARS, we want to do our part in the fight against cancer by raising money to fund education, detection, treatment and research. We do so through our support of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation and the Ellie Fund.
This year, the company raised $400,000 for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation and $300,000 for the Ellie Fund. In addition, ARS donated to more than 15 local charities including Dana Farber, Pan-Mass Challenge, Newton Community Development Foundation, Red Sox Foundation and The Boston Police Foundation. Since 2006, ARS has generously donated almost $4,000,000 to both the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation and the Ellie Fund, supporting breast cancer patients and their families. A great portion of the funds donated each year are a result of the Annual ARS Casino Night, which will take place at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, March 24, 2018. ARS on the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Telethon
Jessica Riehl and her good friend Emily a cancer survivor were on WEEI during ARS’s sponsored hour of the Jimmy Fund Telethon. Watch their video on YouTube here.
More about Emily:
Emily was diagnosed with Stage IV high risk neuroblastoma a month before her 4th birthday in 2009. She had an eight hour surgery to remove a tumor on her adrenal gland and was part of a trial at Dana Farber that randomized her for two back-to-back stem cell transplants in addition to 21 rounds of radiation and 6 months of an experimental therapy called antibody therapy.
We started Team EmmaBelle as she was finishing treatment in 2010. We named the team EmmaBelle because it’s a combination of both girls names (Isabelle and Emily). It was important to include both girls for our team’s earnings towards neuroblastoma because Emily’s cancer was as much as a fight for Isabelle as it was for Emily.
Emily has some collateral damage from treatment that includes a 65% bilateral hearing loss, endocrine issues, stunted growth, and severe kidney damage. But she has a high quality of life and excels in school and on the soccer field and basketball court. She loves to draw, read and play her her two golden doodles Obi and Agnes.
